Ren Xiaoyu's Yuyuyu restaurant, a bold departure from traditional Chinese restaurant design, has won the prestigious Silver A' Design Award for its innovative and contemporary approach. The design, which combines lines, points, and natural elements, creates a serene and comfortable environment that breaks away from the bustling worldliness often associated with such establishments.
The Yuyuyu restaurant, spanning 3,700 square feet, is a testament to Ren Xiaoyu's innovative design approach. The designer has eschewed traditional symbolic elements, opting instead for a design language that uses lines and points to express the oriental mood. The design aims to evoke a sense of "peaceful comfort" that is a departure from the often overwhelming worldliness of traditional Chinese restaurants.
The restaurant's design is characterized by an array installation composed of lines and dots, extending from the entrance to the interior of the restaurant. This unique design element blurs the boundaries between the interior and exterior, enhancing the visibility and flow of the space. The installation is used from the door to the partition inside the dining room and the ceiling in the dining area, creating a cohesive and visually striking design language.
Ren Xiaoyu's design process involved a careful selection of materials that align with the restaurant's steady, restrained temperament. The space is made of ferrous metal, wood, and grey stone flooring, creating a harmonious blend of natural and industrial elements. The end of the dining area features a screen depicting a fish passing through lotuses, serving as a visual centerpiece.
The project, which started in October 2018 in Shenzhen and concluded in March 2019, faced the challenge of infusing new features and details into a traditional Chinese restaurant. Ren Xiaoyu's innovative approach, which involved abandoning traditional symbolic elements and using lines and points to express the oriental mood, resulted in a design that is both contemporary and deeply rooted in Chinese aesthetics.
